Visit hootsuite.com and select the button “Get Started Now” on the “Free” account.

You’ll need to provide your email address, name and then to enter and confirm a password.

Once logged in, you’ll need to add your Twitter account ….

1st Login

and then authorise your Twitter account.

Clicking the “Connect with Twitter” button will take you to this screen:

You will usually only need to do this once.

HootSuite has columns of Tweets etc called Streams; each tab can hold 10 streams. There is no limit to the amount of Tabs you can use.

By default, the “Out of the box” set up will look like this:

First View of the dashboard

Your “Home Feed” is the first stream; listing tweets from the people you follow”. A mentions column which will be where someone has mentioned your Twitter name. The “Direct Message” column is will show any private messages that only you will be able to see.

The “Sent Tweets” column will show the tweets that you send.

Here’s how to start adding other streams (columns of tweets etc)

Click the “+ Add Stream” button and you will see the following menu appear.

Add a stream

There are 4 Tabs available, Stream, Search, Keyword and Lists.

If we select the Search Tab you can see

Searching

In this example, I have searched for “Astronomy”.

Once you have added whatever search term you want to use, you simply click the “Add Stream” button and you will have added an additional stream displaying any tweets mentioning (in this case) Astronomy.
